Taupe Tub Surround in Carson

About This Project

A three-wall tub surround installation in a Carson home, using large-format taupe stone-look porcelain tile. The tile runs from the tub rim to the ceiling on all three walls, with a horizontal accent band at eye height breaking the field tile into two zones.

Large-format tile on a tub surround presents a specific layout challenge: the tub rim is rarely perfectly level. We checked the rim level before setting any tile and shimmed the first course to establish a true horizontal datum. If the first course follows a slightly out-of-level rim, every subsequent course amplifies the error. By the time you reach the ceiling, a 1/4 inch error at the tub can become a 3/4 inch error at the top — visible from across the room.

The accent band required sourcing a complementary tile in the same series. We confirmed the grout joint would align between the field tile and the accent band before ordering material.
