Marble Bathroom Remodel in Old Torrance

About This Project

A full bathroom remodel in an Old Torrance home, replacing original tile throughout. White marble-look large-format porcelain covers the shower walls and the main bathroom walls, with a glass shower enclosure framed in matte black hardware. The floor is a separate terrazzo-look mosaic in the shower and large-format tile in the main bathroom area.

The shower walls were built out with cement backer board, waterproofed with a liquid-applied membrane, and set in large-format 12x24 porcelain. Large tiles on a vertical surface require back-buttering to ensure full coverage and prevent hollow spots that can crack under thermal expansion. In the compact bathrooms common in Old Torrance bungalows, keeping large-format tile level and plumb is the main technical challenge.
